2K Hires Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Response
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the need for a clearer game identity.
The president stated that the developers is now overhauling the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Hires
The news mirrors a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.
Here is the complete message from the president's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative designers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to endure.”
Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the need for a more distinct identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the input to mind and revamped the title with a refreshed direction - one that’s positioned to deliver on its potential to our fans.
The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the incoming Lead of the team. Following some time of discussions, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.
His guidance and background in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having devoted the recent years creating and managing some of the most popular series in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in receiving him next week. We are all eager to continue witnessing the progress of the game in the months to follow.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
The appointee currently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Details and Concept
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year together with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Take on the rivals with fresh skills, challenges, and tests that change every session. Will you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, risk it all, and trust your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."
The game lacks an official debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as creation continues.
