Guitar Hero at 20 – How a Plastic Axe Bridged the Gap Between Rock Fans

Marking two decades after the legendary game hit the market in North America, offering players everywhere the opportunity to become a rock star. Not literally, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that someone who's mastered Free Bird’s four-minute guitar solo before a packed living-room audience.

Created by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a guitar-shaped controller to follow on-screen cues scrolling down the display synchronized to a song. Every sequence corresponded to particular chords, creating the sensation of a genuine performance.

Harmonix previously tried its hand in the music genre before partnering with RedOctane, which was acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they established the foundations for a surprising massively profitable series that had a remarkable influence for many of the artists featured, introducing decades-old bands to a new generation of younger players.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, recalls the initial budgetary hurdles in securing the recordings – despite the fact initial releases primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We rerecorded every song because the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Even with the publishing rights alone, it proved nearly impossible. We couldn’t get acts such as the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced the project would flop. However, when Guitar Hero took off, and record sales and radio play were going up, all artists desired to be in.”

He continues: “One of the amazing things was how many parents got in touch expressing gratitude for introducing their kids to the music they loved. It evolved into a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains a New Audience

Irish group one featured act included their track on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist recalls how the series brought older hits back into vogue: “Guitar Hero provided a bigger, new demographic. Typically such music was considered music that was past it, however once it got included in the title and teenagers discovered it, suddenly it was cool. This validated the genre, and got rid of the outdated tag. It gave our catalog a new life.”

At that time, the Answer’s debut album remained not available stateside, so Guitar Hero served as a primary platform of discovery for the band during their US tour supporting the rock giants. “Their crew had on the song on the tour bus, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Impact

Rock’s heavyweight names quickly capitalised on the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others featuring in dedicated game editions centered around each band’s catalogue and related stories, imagery and legendary status. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly earned the band greater revenue compared to their records. It sold more than half a million units in its first week, and sales of Aerosmith’s music rose significantly at a time as the industry was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero still motivates nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Earlier this year, an online personality completed a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with almost identical mechanics but an array of personalization features. This track is challenging enough on the hardest setting, let alone played at double speed while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated requiring nine months to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, imaginary experience. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you ought to pick up a real gun and enlist,” says DragonForce guitarist the artist.

The band had already wrapped up a profitable run before their hit appeared on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it made them a household name. “I recall our distributors informing us that our records were moving rapidly,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we performed just before top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it has threatened to overshadow everything else the band has done. Last year, the song was used in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “Should you just hear one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has their own path in music and I'm pleased we played a role of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier marketing, whether it’s for cars, clothes or games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “That’s exactly what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “The excitement of being a rock star in the spotlight. From day one, the co-founders believed there’s an instinctive urge to create songs, and their goal was to use technology to allow people to participate”.

The majority installments came out in just a five-year period between 2005 and 2010, including derivative titles like the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and Band Hero. Subsequently, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Titles such as Clone Hero and newer releases have kept the community alive, with set to be a new product from the original publisher on the way. A new studio has begun production on their first music game. Original co-founders are both involved in advisory roles. Are gamers prepared to welcome a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“We thought such titles could be like Madden allowing annual releases,” he remarks. “With abundant new music that it could be perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. It's entirely possible for it to continue with new generations.”
