In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
